Somebody Stop Me!

It’s candy corn season.

Somebody stop me. Please. I will eat these things until my belly aches, my throat hurts and I am otherwise convinced I am slowly killing myself. Death by candy corns.

Even worse than my possible comatose state or death caused by obscene amounts of sucrose, is this sobering statement about sugar:

The arrival of candy corns in stores all across America is only the beginning of the mass amounts of high fructose corn syrup that will be screaming out to us from their tiny little vacuum-packed plastic bags until February.

That is a long time to show self control people, and I’m just not so sure I can handle it. I need help! Or I may end up passed out on the floor next to a bag of candy corns.

I am so inspired by the nine miles! And the three recent posts–ha! As for this one, can I sign my name on it, too? Why are candy corns so darn easy to eat? I bought a bag last night and it’s already half-gone! Candy corn for breakfast …?

    • Butterfingers for Breakfast says:

Haha! I thought about that. More like candy corn for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack. Sickening! But they are so easy to eat..until you feel sick. Miss you and thanks! I am trying to keep up with my blog more…as for the nine miles…half marathon is a week and a half away!!!

  2. sarahnsh says:

I really do love candy corn, I do have to fight myself not to thrown them back and eat a whole bag plus some. I never heard of doing peanut butter on top of them, that’s crazy! And possibly very tasty. 😀

  3. Mikalee Byerman says:

This is TOO funny — I was in Safeway with my boyfriend two nights ago, and he almost passed out in the aisle with excitement over finding candy corn. He loudly proclaimed, “It’s candy corn season!!! Woo-hoo!!!”

I slinked away, bag of candy corn in hand. Gotta make the BF happy, after all…

    😉

  4. aunaqui says:

So basically, YOU will die of candy corns and I will pass away due to excessive and sickening large intakes of pumpkin pie.
    🙂

  5. apuddingaday365 says:

I saw these for the first time today (in the UK). I nearly bought some but didn’t. I now don’t know if I should go back and get some as they are clearly good, or steer well clear to save myself!

    • Butterfingers for Breakfast says:

No candy corns in the UK!?!?!? I don’t think I could live there! 😉 just kidding. They are oh so delicious, but you may want to steer clear…or else! ha! Thanks for stopping by. And I really do love the U.K.! I studied abroad there one summer 🙂

  6. Deina Zartman says:

We’d never eat 2 cups of sugar with a spoon or straw, yet we’ll eat about 5 cups worth in the form of candy corns! 😉

  7. Evie Garone says:

OMG, I can’t believe the advice you’ve received for even more sinful sweets! You’re all gonna’ hate me, but I don’t indulge! Just lots of sugar in my coffee! But my husband is addicted to candy corns, and I thought he was weird!!! Ha, ha, ha! Now I know he’s not alone! Perhaps you can start a support group for all of you! Good luck through Halloween!

  8. Karen says:

While I am so NOT a fan of candy corn. I was an instant fan of your bog simply because of it’s title “Butterfingers for Breakfast”! Good luck and don’t be too hard on yourself.

  9. pierrmorgan says:

Never fear! I have the solution – add some protein to the mix: Spanish Peanuts. I can’t say it will curb your addiction, but you can feel better about your sucrose consumption, especially when you have to stop to use both hands to vacuum up the lovely little peanut skins left around the house.

  10. PCC Advantage says:

Although I am not a fan of candy corns, I do understand the hold that sugar has on you. In fact, just about a half hour ago, my boss gave me chocolate brownie, topped with white icing, covered in a thick layer of milk chocolate with bits of toffee on top of it. It was about the size of my fist. I started eating it, loved it, and even though I started to get the “sugar shakes” and feel sick to my stomach, I couldn’t stop eating it…it was that tasty. 🙂

Good luck with your candy corns over the next couple of months…I feel for you! 😉

  11. fireandair says:

I’m sentimental about candy corn, even though it’s so sweet it’s sort of gross. One of the things I remember my dad doing just before he died very suddenly was sending me a bag of candy corn to my dorm room on the sly with a note in it saying, “Don’t tell Mom I sent this.” 🙂

    • Butterfingers for Breakfast says:

That’s a sweet memory about your dad…he had it right! But, I’ll admit, it is kinda gross. For some reason when I found out it had honey it made me like it a little less. But then I forgot, and ate half a bag. That was a couple of years ago. Still going strong…

  12. pastormag says:

I narrowly avoided the temptation to buy these babies on my last shopping trip. My rule is: wait until October (and then go crazy). And I second the peanut mix recommendation: yum! Only eight more days till my Official Candy Corn Season Opener . . .

  13. ournote2self says:

I can’t help myself around candy corn either. If it’s near me, I don’t stop eating it until it’s gone. Then I feel sick to my stomach and start seeing things. Small price to pay for 1 minute of happiness, right?

    Congrats on being FP’d!!!

  14. Meghan Ingram says:

    Ohmygosh, Candy Corn!!!! My favorite!

I once heard a comedian joke about how we always get excited for candy corn and eat it, and then feel awful and wish we hadn’t. His big theory is that every year, all the bags of uneaten candy corn that people throw out are collected by a particular set of dump trucks, and are then returned to the candy corn factory and packaged back up again for people to buy next time. They never seem to really go bad, and no one ever seems to finish all of the candy corn they buy.

I am about to head out to the store to get me some though! 🙂

    Congrats on being Pressed!

  15. vasudha says:

what a lovely post about the loveliest things. congrats on being FPed! 🙂
i love them too! & i thought i was the only one, since my roommates barely touch that stuff. 😮 good for me i suppose 😉
& the only way to stop eating them is to not buy them! 😀

  16. Diana says:

Yeah, I know. It’s a good thing I don’t particularly fancy the stuff. Now candy corn comes in all seasons, brown/orange/yellow for Thanksgiving; Red/green/white for Christimas; and pink/white for Valentines. My sons love the stuff. Thank goodness they haven’t figured out a way to seasonally market Twix bars. Well, I guess that means they are available year round. Yum!

  17. dani.o says:

I love this!!! I absolutely hate candy corn but the mini candy being sold now is too tempting and I always give in… m&m’s and almond joys for dinner I just did that…

  18. GraceLynneFleming says:

haha I’m not a candy corn fan but I am a huge candy fan – all year round! and I’m a Reese obsessed Halloween freak! I truly believe Reeses taste better when they’re in holiday shapes, pumpkins, hearts, tree (and I eat so many!) haha

    -grace

    • Butterfingers for Breakfast says:

Dear Boss, sorry I will not be coming to work today, your candy corns are too tempting. thanks. 🙂 Sounds like a good reason to me! Otherwise, you might really end up sick and then you would definitely need time off. It’s just precautionary 🙂

  19. gothichydran126 says:

Oh gosh!! Candy Corn, Indian Corn, and Autumn mix!!! I love them all. I also like the candies that mimic candy corns such as those orange and white Dots flavored ones (Gumdrop Dots)!!
If you think its bad now….wait til the stores start pricing them and all the other candies at 75% off after Halloween.

  20. Mama's Empty Nest says:

Funny! Why do those yellow, orange and white candies call out to us? I just bought a bag the other day thinking I’d place their colorful little selves in a cute candy dish when company comes this weekend. Ha! Hubby broke into it last night. Of course, I couldn’t let him eat alone! You know, according to Buddy in the movie, Elf, candy corns are just a part of the four food groups: “candy, candy corns, candy canes and syrup.” So from one candy corn-a-holic to another, let the sugar fest begin! 😉

    • Butterfingers for Breakfast says:

You know, I totally forgot Buddy’s four food groups. But now that makes me feel much better. I think I have fulfilled them all today. Let’s see, syrup on my french toast, candy corns…other candy..maybe not, and no candy canes just yet. I guess I’ve got some work to do. Thanks so much for stopping by! I like your style. That is always my intention too…put them in a cute little bowl for guests…so the story goes 🙂

  21. Kate Milad says:

Brooke, do you remember my mom always putting out candy corn and peanuts at Halloween time? If you don’t it’s because I ate all of them by the time you would get to my house 🙂 Really good combo!!!

    • Butterfingers for Breakfast says:

I guess you ate them all because I don’t remember that. But after all these recommendations I am definitely going to have to try it!! Those were some good days at the Allen household! Thanks so much for checking out my blog 🙂 Hope things are going well for you!!

  22. Renee says:

I can pretty much steer clear of the candy corn, but jelly beans watch out! I keep my next dentist visit in the back of my head when I start thinking about consuming a load of candy. Congrats on being FP!

  23. C.B. Wentworth says:

I just downed an entire bag myself. Candy corn is so addictive, but then so is chocolate, those little sugar chicks that come out at Easter, KitKats, Peanut Butter cups, those minty M&M’s that come out at Christmas . . .

Oooo and those chocolate Hershey eggs with the candy shell.

    OMG . . . I can’t stop! Lol!

    Great post!

  24. Nastasja says:

Oh, these are soooo tasty! I do not blame you, yet I’m lucky not to have them (that often) here in Germany! 😉
Once I tried them when one friend of mine brought them on her way back from USA. Gosh, I could swim in those! What sometimes helps me to keep my fingers off sweets is the figure which I have to put in the pants every day I try to dress myself. Going out naked (and fat) doesn’t look that good. 😀

  25. c & s W says:

Candy corn = best thing ever about fall in America. Sadly, I’m lampooned in a country that doesn’t even do Halloween, much less produce sugar-high inducing orange cones of delight. Living vicariously through your consumption, so I say keep eating!

      • Mariajose says:

Haha. It’s almost like yesterday. I love California Pizza Kitchen and my boyfriend and I went yesterday for date night. It was great, specially when it came to the red velvet cake. I still managed to down it all after the appetizer and the entree. It was just for that night. And next week, there will be another night. It’s all good(:

  26. Diane Ludeking says:

I am so familiar with the struggle you speak of! I went through a phase recently where I ate an entire bag of almond M&Ms OR a pint of ice cream each night (one night I did both). This insanity lasted a solid week and I fantasize daily about doing it again (as I sit typing with my pants undone).

    • Butterfingers for Breakfast says:

Well, it’s yellow, white and orange, in the shape of a little triangle, that is probably supposed to resemble a kernel of corn. It has the sweetest softest texture, and it tastes like it was made by the gods. But then it makes your tummy hurt. 😦 I wish you could experience it…well, the first half. It’s hard to explain how good it is…you just have to try some!

  27. invisiblesandwichtm says:

I’m not a big fan of candy corn, but I enjoy it occasionally. If you can’t keep yourself from gorging on them, at least make sure you’re getting plenty of exercise, so that the calories don’t obesify you.

Now one food that I probably overconsume during the fall months is pumpkin pie…

  28. Kimby says:

Too funny! Candy corn is the ultimate fall treat. (My sister even sent me candy corn magnets last year, knowing my penchant for them.) Great post and congratulations on FP!

  29. John Hardy Bell says:

You think candy corns are good, just wait till Christmas and the cherry coral M&Ms hit the shelves!! Think I’ll end up writing a blog about that one!! 🙂

  30. bethsciallo says:

The only reason I do not overdose is geography. You can’t get them in Scotland! I have them “imported” via (Grand)momma and save the bags in the back of the top kitchen cabinet until Thanksgiving. Yes, they are that important. 🙂

  31. jeanne says:

I do love those darn things…and maryjanes and mini tootsie rolls..its obscene my love affair with halloween candy. Hoping beyond hope you find your will power.

  32. africa18 says:

I must say your story is identical to a very good college friend of mine from college!!!!! She’ll eat these things until they’re all gone, she cannot stop!!! I hope you over come the addiction LOL!! 🙂 Enjoy the season!!

  33. Sammy says:

Candy corn is completely underrated. I think a large reason why I love it so much is because I associate it with fall memories. It really shouldn’t taste as good as it does…it’s sugary plastic. Yumyum.

  34. Nicole says:

I suffer the same fate when it comes to candy corn! AND I have a wedding dress to fit into in 9 months… well, I guess I also have to try it on and pick it out and all those good things that happen first. Anyway, it’s about time I pick one out, but I’ve been putting it off in the hopes that I might slim down just a tad, but with Halloween candy hitting the shelves, I’ve definitely got a challenge ahead of me.

  35. Rachel says:

but why should anyone stop you? candy corn season is the best of the year! they’ve even started extending it to make christmas colored candy corn, and there’s easter/spring candy corn as well. like almost all things, however, it’s no where near as good as the original though

  36. Nancy says:

Ah, I’m glad to know I’m not alone in my candy corn addiction! My roommate in college used to hide mine from me for fear I would be lost to a sugar-induced coma.

  37. wadingacross says:

I love candy corn myself, but my addiction causes my teeth to hurt when I overeat them. It doesn’t help that I still occasionally shove them onto my teeth like I did when I was a kid. Now I do it to look like a dork for my children and make them laugh.

I’m normally a baked goods person when it comes to my sweet tooth, but Halloween does bring up some of my favorite candies…

Candy corn, circus peanuts, orange slices, peanut butter bars, mary janes, bit-o-honey’s, peanut butter taffy’s, etc. I like a lot of the candies most kids these days don’t and won’t touch.

But, I throw around my kids and I burn off the calories… cuz I’m a guy… and I can do that!!!

  38. Jacob Ryan Paul says:

Ha! My roommate came home with a huge bag. I have not stopped eating the candy corn and I’m kind of annoyed at her childlike diet. Not because I find the choices to be poor, but she is a gorgeous ballerina who’s body doesn’t seem to notice the crap she eats while I… oh well, that deserves it’s own post 😉 Enjoy fall!

  39. darlene says:

Stop eating those candy? No way, sometimes it is easier to tell others not to do it and to do it oneself. However I realise the danges to over consumption and I am slowly reducing the amount that I take. I don’t believe I can stop eating those entirely but I am reducing the consumption…

  40. marlowesnymph says:

I love candy corn! Halloween is my favorite holiday (it’s tied with Christmas) and I love all of the decorations and candy that comes with it. I like to put the candy corns in my gums and pretend they’re teeth. I’m basically a child.

    Congrats on fp! marlowesnymph.wordpress.com

  41. wemeetparis says:

okay, two things have rendered me totally jealous: the mention of butterfingers – my all time favorite candy which, of course, aren’t available in Paris – and candy corn. the BEST halloween candy ever. which is also unavailable in Paris. oh how candy can make you homesick!

  42. Lashawn says:

Omg I love candy corn. And caramel candy corn. Mmm. I think my yearly sugar coma begins in September and doesn’t end until after Easter, lol. I need to go pick up another bag of candy corn tomorrow when I go to Target…I noticed the last time I was there that they have “gourmet” candy corn in various other flavors…I’ll just have to try them and see if they are equally yummy, hahaha!

  43. Stephanie says:

Oh I feel your pain. Candy Corn is the first thing I think about this time of year. So far I have resisted the temptation to purchase them and the stores don’t make that easy at all. I have to admit, the thought of them makes my teeth hurt, but they are soooo good!

  44. David says:

AH! The Candy Corn: vegetable of the candy world! My birthday is coming up on Oct.1. And for the past 20 years or so, every birthday is celebrated with a chocolate on chocolate cake covered in marshmallow pumpkins and candy corn. The pumpkins are a rather new addition, maybe 10 years or so, but candy corn has always been the cake decoration of choice! Yes, my mother sometimes add sprinkles or maybe some peanut butter filled delight, but I can always count on candy corn. I remember the first time I was presented with this candy covered cake: I was stunned! Who knew that these orange, yellow, and white triangles would be so good this way! The look was amazing…what a celebration of fall birthday! My birthday is not the same with out those little sugary confections smeared with chocolate icing.

  45. Anicka says:

Oh no, I don’t taste that candy corn yet, but for I will probably like that since everyone here posted that it was awesome. 🙂 I think I’m gonna asked my husband to find me that candy (Giggling).

Anyway, how will I help you stop it? Hmm probably think about your vital statistics, and think if it will damage your figure if you don’t stop, 🙂

  46. honnier says:

Same here! had bought a box of 50 assorted small chocolate bars for my little sister and brother->Finished->got another one->10 or so left…

  47. inkspeare says:

I hear you; they are my weakness too, along with the assortment of candy pumpkins. The way I see it – it’s only once a year so might as well enjoy it.

    • Butterfingers for Breakfast says:

Haha..Thanks! Well, I actually didn’t eat them for breakfast…just lunch, for a snack and then with dinner 🙂 But I have eaten Butterfingers and chocolate cake before. And you know what everyone also tells me is gross, but I do anyway (on occasion). Cold pizza for breakfast. It is divine! Thanks for stopping in and checking out my blog 🙂

  48. Heather Gonzalez says:

I’m obsessed! I love candy corn! Everyone tells me I’m crazy for liking it but it is soo awesome! I have been working on my candy cravings too. Eating more fruit helps out a lot. now if only i could control the coffee and cokes :/ lol

  49. krazyforkrochet says:

I just found your blog, but I wanted to comment on this post.
I do the exact same thing! I seriously have to stop buying these bags of candy corn, because they are gone by the next day! If I buy it, I’m gonna eat it.

Great blog, BTW, glad I found it 😀

  50. Jen says:

Do you like the pumpkin ones? I can usually blissfully plow through 3/4ths of a bag of those until I OD & never want to see candy corn again. Once a year is juuuust about right…

  51. Frances Arnold says:

Actually, this isn’t such a bad position to be in. If you get sick from candy corn, you’ll eventually stop yourself from eating them. Try to eat so many of them that you get so sick that the mere thought of one is terrible. Consider that state a blessing. It’s the best diet plan you can think of. The sooner you OD on candy corn, the sooner you’ll be eating what your body really wants: real, nutritious food. Get in touch with me to let me know how this goes. I have no doubt it will work.

    Best wishes.

  52. thedailydish says:

Ahhh.. candy corn. I love it at Halloween and laugh whenever I see it other times of the year. They may color it red white & blue, or red & green, but WHO’S BUYING THAT?!! Inquiring minds wanna know.

That said, woman please eat your fair share. What you leave on the store shelves could be coming home w/ me and things could get ugly.

In conclusion, I can only say thank GOD almighty there’s no holiday associated w/ Circus Peanuts.

    • Butterfingers for Breakfast says:

Definitely not me! Candy corn just doesn’t work other times of the year! Circus Peanuts…other people have mentioned those. I do like those, but don’t buy them often. I guess I’ve got enough trouble of my own 🙂 Thanks for the congrats and for stopping in again!! You’re too kind 🙂

  53. Kena's Kitchen says:

I got a laugh out of when you said “eat them until my throat hurts”. My husband loves candy corn and he whenever he eats too much of it, that is exactly what he complains about…his throat hurting! My favorite thing about candy corn is their texture…it’s addicting…I love them! Have a great day!

  54. Alexandra says:

Wow, I’ve never heard of those! They do look so funny, as if a rainbow dragon lost its teeth.
The tops though really remind me the corn seeds. So they are sweet?
    How interesting!
I adore corn, boiled salty and preferably near the sea, but it looks like I could probably like these ones as well.
Anyway, don’t cancel yourself a pleasure. I read it somewhere…let me remember… something like “don’t cancel your pleasure, there always will be those ready to do it for you”

  55. Edward Hotspur says:

They have candy corn, but why don’t they have candy versions of any other vegetables? Wouldn’t that be a great way to get kids to eat them? At least for one bite? Candy asparagus, candy green beans, candy broccoli. Mmmmmm!

  56. lisaalinh says:

Yum! I love candy corn and am glad its back in season. Hope you don’t pass out from all the bad-for-us-but-we-eat-it-anyways (aka candy).

  57. Lights Camera Glamour Starring Kelly says:

I can’t agree with you more! Not only do I wait for these during fall/Halloween time… They bring me back to my childhood.. Seeing these colorful little candies sold in the mist of all Halloween candies and costumes.. still brings a smile to my face and a mild tummy ache 🙂
    Great post!!

  58. Patty says:

Dear Lord, that photo made me drool. I should be the last person you ask for advice re kicking your candy corn habit. Just this week, I discovered that I had a slumbering sweet tooth. Before, I couldn’t get enough of salty and spicy snacks, but last weekend was all about the sweet stuff. I ate hard butter-caramel candy like it was popcorn (with dire results for my digestive system).

Sigh. But I’m well aware of the consequences of sugar binges. I might just stick to fruits this week. MIGHT.

  59. Eekchan (@eekchan) says:

Oh my Goodness! I never would of thought I would be running into someone in a blog with the same seasonal candy problem as me. I saw the candy corns at the grocery store when I went to buy some stuff for the house. And it is all over the entrance and the check out counter! I ended up buying ike and mikes. I should gone with candy corn because ikes and mikes was not satisfying my sweet tooth. either way I lost because it is still sugar! LOL hard to resist the Fall Sweetness.
